Vote for Hidden Stories in the People’s Projects lottery funding – bringing people together with hidden illness and disability #SundayBlogShare

I have shamelessly lifted this direct from the Root Experience website as they have contacted me to ask for help to vote for their Hidden Stories initiative to win funding via The People’s Projects for the UK lottery.  This is a vitally important service for people suffering with invisible illness/disabilities and as someone who lives with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and chronic pain every day, I am very happy to be an advocate for this project.

The voting closes on Monday 30th April at midday.  You will find links to vote below.

Please also have a look at the Root Experience website here and it would be fantastic if you would share this post on your social media,

Thanks, Claire x

hidden-stories

Hidden Stories is about helping people to share their experiences of what it’s like to live with an illness or condition that can’t be seen. It’s about replacing loneliness, fear and stigma with compassion, understanding and empowerment.

hidden-stories-video.jpg

HELP US SHARE MORE HIDDEN STORIES

Ninety per cent of people who relate to having a disability don’t have any visible symptoms, which often leads to misunderstanding, judgement and isolation. We want to shine a light on the wide range of emotional and physical struggles that are unseen in our communities, and encourage more compassion around them.

So we’re helping people with life-limiting ‘invisible’ conditions – from anxiety to autism, OCD to ME – share their experiences as part of an illustrated book designed to open up conversation and offer support.

With a People’s Projects grant, we’d be able to hold storytelling workshops and work with support groups in Worthing, Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth, Chichester, Swindon, Oxford, Bournemouth, Crawley and Woking. Then after publishing our book, we’d distribute it for free on our Hidden Stories tour.

THE HIDDEN STORIES BOOK: A MANUAL FOR CHANGE

Hidden Stories will enable people to learn about different conditions – and also seek support if they need it. Alongside personal accounts, there’ll be adaptable open letters which can be used to help explain conditions to family, friends and colleagues. The Hidden Stories book is only the beginning. We intend to build a ‘living library’ to help as many people as possible to tell their stories – because only by sharing our experiences can we begin to change how we see and behave toward one another.

THE HIDDEN STORIES JOURNEY

https://player.vimeo.com/video/263462890″,”resolvedBy”:”manual”}” data-block-type=”32″>

At the start of our journey, we helped people with ‘invisible’ illnesses tell their Hidden Stories through a series of creative groups resulting in an interactive exhibition at Brighton Dome. We used storytelling, visual arts and soundscapes to find different ways of exploring and expressing their conditions. This has already made a difference to the participants’ lives. It’s helping them to feel more visible and valued within their communities, and more empowered to talk about their experiences without fear of judgement.

Here are some comments about the exhibition at Brighton Dome, as well as snapshot of our creative groups…

HELP US TO CONTINUE OUR WORK

Hidden Stories is an opportunity to talk about what’s unseen in our communities. Through our work we want to challenge perceptions, combat loneliness and invite people on a playful exploration of what it is to be human. Please vote for us to win a People’s Project grant, which would enable us to create our Hidden Stories book. Monday Magic – Inspiring Blogs for You!

It is time to share some more blog posts with you after a beautiful weekend here in the SE of the UK.  Hubby would probably moan as of course with a little bit of sunshine the garden begins to grow and he has had to mow the lawn…again!! The younger members of the PainPals house have been enjoying the sun and the Queen’s 92nd birthday in different ways.

Monday Magic Inspiring Blogs for You! 23 April

The student engineer is edging closer and closer to the finishing line of his course, and one major piece to complete is the final year group project.  From the cursing coming from his room, I think that I can safely say that the quadcopter they have been re programming has not performed or given them the data that they hoped for.  Whilst our student engineer is happy to write up a detailed report (how detailed – remember his middle name is lastminute.com!) explaining why the flying machine failed to perform, the other student engineers keep appearing on our doorstep from London wanting to try something new.  He is not impressed – but the beautiful park that is on our doorstep played host to these young engineers playing in the sun on Saturday – time that could have been spent revising for final exams, I am told!!

The politics student disappeared up to London on Friday and told me he was off to Hyde Park.  Naive mum here didn’t realise that there was a big gathering including lots of students in Hyde Park called 420 Day – Support for Cannabis  – “but you talk about use of medical marijuana for chronic pain & MS, Mum!!”.  I am told that his friends were playing football and sunbathing, and that “there were loads of people and no trouble”. He has returned to uni today with a slightly pinker neck and lots of reminders about what might happen if he mixes his migraine and anxiety drugs with other substances, including alcohol!!

Finally the lovely girl is busy preparing for her art exam tomorrow – panic has set in over the weekend and she is working on her final sketchbook, the glue gun is working in overdrive and various household items are being smashed to add to her final piece!  A trip to the local part also helped with some more photographs to add to the Fragments theme, which she is has interpreted as mould and decay…..hmmm, attractive.  Actually the trial pieces she has prepared look pretty good….but I will be happy to get my lounge back!

Yours truly actually managed a night out, having had a light induced migraine since Friday.  I went with my mum to see the wonderful “Remembering Fred” starring Jeanette Manrara and Aljaz Skorjanec from the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.  Lovely night which I will write about again – but I actually felt like me!  I put on clothes that due to drug induced weight gain I hadn’t worn for a while, I put on some slap, looked in the mirror…and there I was! The person that I remember, not the pasty worn out trout I have become used to seeing.  Eldest son commented after I had used the lovely girl’s concealer under my eyes that I did look different – “I’m used to seeing you look really tired!” – not you look nice, Mum!  But with a bit of concealer and a slash of red lippie, you would never have known just how anaemic I am or that the weight loss probably hasn’t been for particularly healthy reasons (gastroparesis & gut problems).

Monday Magic – Inspiring Blogs for You!

Today it is a beautiful day, the sun is shining and apparently we are about to have a warm snap in the UK.  Just as the kids all go back to school – typical!  We still have a house full here and the mound of shoes grows daily inside the front door.  Our local park has turned into a swamp over Easter and several pairs of these shoes, including my DM boots borrowed by the lovely girl, are thick in mud.  Shoes.JPGI wonder how long they will sit there for?  The housework fairies don’t function so well in this house these days!

Tulips

Revision time, or maybe I should say panic time, is reaching fever pitch here and the art work for the final exam piece is being practiced on every available surface…..using a mixture of paint, plaster, polyfilla, wood.  Watch this space for the outcome! The eldest and youngest visited their grandparents for a few days giving us some respite from the folders and books!

One of the blogs I have picked is The Unofficial A – Z of Babies, and it struck me this week that we have come full circle with the politics student.  When he was a baby I remember well the nights being woken for feeds….what I didn’t expect was the nights being woken at 4.30am to recur 19 years later!  This time the waking is done by a front door slamming so loudly that we could hear it shake in the frame….in the way that someone who is drunk tries so carefully to be quiet and careful, but just makes it all ten times worse.  Let’s just say he was unable to do his sister’s paper round for her that morning…..

Onto our blogs – it is World Craft Week this week, so I have shared the link to the Conscious Crafties site, where those with chronic illness or caring for a loved one can show you their handmade crafts and designs.  There is a story feature, a book review and easing chronic pain with pole dancing!!  So time to sit back with your coffee and enjoy so fantastic blog posts….

Book Blog Tour – Book Review of “Evanthia’s Gift” Book 1 The Gift Saga by Effie Kammenou

I have been fortunate to be given a copy of this book by the author through Love Books Group in exchange for a fair and honest review.  All opinions are my own.

Evanthia’s Gift: Book One in The Gift Saga – Women’s fiction/ contemporary romance – Women’s fiction 2106 Reader’s Favorite Award finalist – Available in print, kindle and audible

Review

Anastacia Fotopoulos has moved to the USA after the horrors of the second world war in order to educate herself and so take a step closer to fulfilling her dreams.  She hadn’t anticipated falling in love and marrying the first handsome man to come her way, nor less to then be cruelly betrayed by those closest to her.  It is 1956 and she finds herself alone, pregnant and ashamed to return home to Greece.  She is fortunate in the support of her wonderful friends Stavros and Soula, also first generation Greek immigrants, and her Uncle who gives her employment to keep a roof over her and her new baby daughter’s heads.  The last thing that she expects is to attract the attentions of another young Greek man from her student days, and when her friends try to match make her with Alex she is determined to resist.  She will never put her future in the hands of a man again.

Ana has no idea that Alexandros Giannakos has loved her since he first knew her, and he wins her over with his perseverance and love for both her and daughter Sophia.  Their friends have had two children, Dean and Demi, and life for the close Greek American families is good.  But secrets have been kept, with the best of intentions by all involved, and these will affect life in the future.  The storyline skips forward to the teenage years of the children, and whilst the girls are closer than sisters, a deeper relationship develops between Dean and Sophia.  Their Greek heritage remains extremely important to the families, particularly the older generation, and teen Dean cannot bear to have his life mapped out by his parents – he wants to be an American boy who goes to college and finds his own way in the world.  As a result, he refuses to acknowledge his feelings openly for Sophia and as he pulls away from the family traditions, Sophia too has her young heart broken.

Life continues for the families.  Dean marries a college girl and goes to work for his father in law, Demi marries her secret childhood sweetheart and Sophia throws herself into her career as a dancer.  Along the way family secrets emerge that threaten to splinter relationships, and the rock the families to the core.

If you enjoy family dramas that span generations, without sugar coating life, then you will love this novel.  The historical element of life in war torn Greece was fascinating, as was the story that was so common to many immigrant New York families be they Greek, Italian, Irish….the author is herself a second generation Greek American, and she appears to have exactly the right understanding between the need for embracing their heritage and culture for the older family members, to the desire to be American youngsters and growing up in America for the youngsters.  The friction was palpable in the writing.

The characters all grow and develop throughout the course of the novel as life throws both expected and unexpected joys and sorrows at them.  Ana remains at the core of the story, and I love the way in which both she and Soula are presented as the strong women keeping the wheels of their family life oiled and turning.  The secret to this is food!  I recognised in this book one of my own close friends, who moved to London from Athens in the 1980s, and is the most amazing homemaker and cook.  My kids love to go to her house and she feeds us all in a very similar way to Ana and Soula in the story.  The descriptions of the food are enough to make the reader’s mouth water, but then the author will offer up a wonderful gem every few chapters with a complete Greek recipe.  Imagine my delight when I also found that the author has a recipe website! I am so excited to try cooking some of these mouth-watering delicacies!

Evanthia’s Gift is a love story that covers generations, continents, different loves lost and found – but it is so much more than a love story, it is a story of human life and emotions over a fifty-year period.  I wanted to shout at the characters when the miscommunication caused problems and altered the course of lives and changed choices made.  I cheered when decisions ended well, and I shouted and cried at the bad decisions and the sorrows that life dishes up.  This book depicts real life – not everything can be planned, not everything is sugar coated and joy is tempered with sadness.  If you haven’t guessed I loved this book and am really looking forward to the next one in the series….and yes, you will find out who Evanthia is and just what her gift is.

Five Stars from me!

Monday Magic – Inspiring Blogs for You!

I can’t believe that  another week has gone by and it is time for Monday magic again!  Have you finished your Easter chocolates yet?  There hasn’t been much eating for me this past week with 3 days of clear fluids and yet more bowel prep for a hospital investigation….third time lucky, hurray and thank god!!!  I had already decided that if my body hadn’t played ball this time, my mind was going to tell the doctors where the scope could be shoved…..Anyway this is a story for another spoonie post!!

Monday Magic Inspiring Blogs for You! (1)

I wrote a poem about my brain fog last week and it has played a long visit alongside its brother fatigue this weekend.  My balance has been seriously off kilter and as I went over backwards in the bathroom this morning, the lovely girl couldn’t stop laughing “You look like you’re doing the limbo Mum!”. She did catch me though, ha, ha, ha.  I have been reading a couple of your blogs about journals and bullet points – and decided I must start actually doing this.  Whilst I am up to date with my reading, writing my book reviews has been a bit more of a challenge and my dodgy mind has got the dates completely muddled.  Apologies authors – there will be reviews for everything I have promised.

books-book-pages-read-literature-159866.jpeg

I’m not the only one in need of a journal plan….the lovely girl has devised a lovely revision plan but now she has to get down to actually doing the work, so far so good!  I don’t think the same can be said for her big brothers!!  Have I mentioned before that she is allowed to use a laptop to help with the hand and wrist pain from her Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? Hubby and I took a massive step last week when we allowed her to go a concert to see Declan Mckenna in North London with friends – and they made their own way home.  Conditions were put in place….”text when you leave” “call when you get to the overhead train” “let us know when you’re back”….if anything goes wrong, if the concert over runs, etc etc both your brothers are in London…..We sat here with hubby watching Twitter for the times of the support act finishing, when would young Declan go on stage…and we knew that the venue has an 11pm curfew.

Declan-McKenna-050418-Forum-Emma-Swann-5897-web
Image by Emma Swann on DIY Mag

Of course the girls were fine – she couldn’t text when they got out as they had to rush to get across London for the last train.  But as parents our hearts were in our mouths whilst we had to let go of our baby…..guess what the most surprising thing was?  Both her big brothers called home to check if we had heard from her….the student engineer at half past midnight!  They do care really….

But back to some blogs for you to check out this week….I couldn’t resist sharing one about Hotter shoes teaming up with Marie Curie cancer care & daffodils (as a MC nurse in a previous life!), and I have sent out for supplies for the no bake energy balls recipes.  For some really inspiring stories please read Debs World (her beautiful writing made me cry) and also the book review by Jazmin – Chessy Prout is a remarkable young lady who spoke out about her rape by a fellow pupil at school, the response of others about her and her strength of character.  I have also added a couple of extra posts today as I sit watching the Commonwealth Games.  These young ladies are both swimmers and have both won gold medals at these games, overcoming  huge personal obstacles on the way.  I have written about Siobhan Marie O’Connor here in the past and Sophie Pascoe is a great ambassador for parasports.

In case you mixed it – voting is now open for the Bloggers Bash Awards  so don’t forget to vote for your favourites.

Monday Magic – Chocolatey blog posts for you!

Happy Easter, everyone!  Hope that you have all had a great Easter weekend – here in the UK we are having a typical British Bank Holiday with awful weather.  It is wet, windy and playing havoc with my stretchy joints.  So I’ll just have to self medicate with chocolate……

Pin for later

Chocolatey posts

The lovely girl finished school last week for the Easter break, but not before an evening event to celebrate nearing the end of her GCSE course with her parents and teachers.  I was given my instructions beforehand about what I could and couldn’t talk about…..”in other words, don’t embarrass me, Mum!”  The evening, called the Lilac Reception, gave the girls the opportunity to dress up – if they wished – and for the parents to mingle, consume nibbles & wine and be entertained by a roving magician in a bright red suit.  I believe I just about passed the mum test until the end of the night when I asked the photographer to take a pic of the lovely girl and her friends!!

IMG_3722

Now the revision starts in earnest, for both the lovely girl and the student engineer – who will soon require a new tag as finals and graduation are looming, and the student tag will be a thing of the past.  Whilst our girl has been making decisions for A levels (and has already altered her choices) the student engineer has been applying for jobs….software engineering, but I understand no more than that as I think he speaks a different language to me!!  As for the middle young man-child, we haven’t seen a great deal of him as he catches up with old school friends by night and sleep by day!

Easter pic

Even though there are no little kids in this house now, the amount of chocolate that we have accumulated over the last few days is a bit obscene.  Add to this the cakes for family afternoon tea yesterday and the special Easter/late birthday cake for the politics student – healthy diet is not a word to describe our current intake!  So to continue with the same theme, I thought that I would create a fun list of chocolate inspired blog posts for you today.

So grab a cuppa (hot chocolate if you fancy!), sit back and check out some chocolatey blog posts on this Easter Monday.

Monday Magic – Inspiring Blogs for You

This week has gone so fast.  It began with my second unsuccessful attempt at a colonoscopy….I have another date for next week, so lets hope it is third time lucky.  I will be sorting my own timings for the bowel prep this time as no one seems to believe just how slow my gut is….we really are talking snail’s pace and if I say no action since the hospital visit last Monday, you get my drift!!!  Stretchy connective bowel tissue = baggy bowel = no peristalsis….self diagnosis.

your story

There were two theatre trips, the first with my mum to see the musical Cilla.  It was mum’s Christmas gift, and I wasn’t sure if it would be my cup of tea…but it was a fantastic show, a very talented cast and I knew all the music.  The lads playing The Beatles were just outstanding.  My second theatre trip was somewhat different and i found myself one of the stars on the stage….but my mate Angela over at You Are Awesome blog have convinced me that there is a blog post in this tale!! Watch this space…

Then hubby set off at the crack of dawn Saturday morning to collect the politics student from university – think I mentioned at Christmas that they have to vacate their residences.  Cheeky so and so had phoned up and told dad not to be late because he had already planned a night out for Saturday.  Nothing like coming home to see your family…..the dog was delighted to see him, if in a very slow, old dog way, but then was extremely confused when all 3 human siblings went out.  He, the dog, spent the night at my bedside as if guarding me in case I decided to do a runner too!  The eldest and youngest didn’t come home, but the politics student rolled in at about half 2 – isn’t it funny how it goes full circle from them waking you as babes and then inflicting broken sleep on you again as young adults.

Long legs

This week I have some posts from old friends as well as some new bloggers – the posts are really different too, from a foodie recipe to a beauty recipe to a photo walk in India.  So grab a cuppa, sit down & kick off your shoes and enjoy some fantastic posts from fellow bloggers.

Monday Magic – Inspiring Blogs for You!

Normally I would start a Monday Magic whilst sitting with a cup of coffee on a Monday morning.  But since I was last here, I have been found lurking in hospital corridors again….when a nurse pal texted me last week saying she hoped the picolax (medicine used for bowel clearance!) wasn’t too awful, my response was it wasn’t awful enough as I had to go back for a repeat run.  So the weekend has seen me on clear fluids and then foul fluids (a different, stronger bowel prep), and another admission this morning.  Several nurses looked at me and said that I looked familiar….well let us just say that i will be even more familiar as we go for the third time lucky.  Aghhh….I keep telling them that my gut is also affected by dodgy connective tissue, making it resemble baggy tights!

Enough of that…..there have been some really lovely, inspirational moments this week too that have not involved hospitals or drugs.  A Performing Arts Evening hosted by my Alumni committee, where some very talented people from across the generations and the disciplines spoke and performed with such passion and dedication.  Actress Molly Hanson left us in no doubt just how hard it is to break into the world of acting, the hard graft required at drama school and then the months spent doing any job to pay the bills.  But the elation of winning an acting nomination recently made it all worthwhile.  Amongst this week’s blogs is one that Molly writes with student Isobel Thom (see previous post about Izzy here).

Young singer/songwriter Josh Selimi is currently studying accounting whilst looking for an agent and promotion, whilst at a very youthful 90, Bob Barter stole the show when he took to the keyboards and entranced us with his jazz.

The following night we were treated to a performance of The Adams Family by our daughter’s and eldest son’s schools.  Staged in a local theatre, these young people sang, danced and acted their hearts out – whilst many are studying for GCSEs and A levels.

The middle child celebrated his first birthday away from home and was in full student mode outside a pub by midday.  He actually hung up on his mother when I phoned him and sang Happy Birthday….so hubby phoned straight back and sang the next line, with the eldest finishing off our little ditty!  Talking of birthdays, yours truly spent the weekend up to elbows in icing and glitter creating a pinata unicorn cake for a special 6 year old.
